Hello all,

I've been boarding for about 4 years. i'm a fairly comfortable intermediate.

I'm struggling on steeper reds. I have a tendency to get a bit freaked out and stay on my heel edge, side slipping my way down.

A: this isn't cool, I know.

B: it really burns the old legs out on a long one.

I'm particularly affected on hard packed slopes. If there's a little bit of soft snow on top I don't seem too bad.

Can anyone shed any light  on my problem? Thanks in advance.

I've had to try and break my wife of this same problem for a season. First thing is check your stance. Width and angles can play a huge role in how comfortable you are. She found that riding a little duckfooted (toes out from each other) helped. Another thing to keep in mind is forward lean. By adjusting this you can get your to your heels quicker and be forced to ride in a bent knee position. Remember a little goes a long way! This makes you concentrate more on a flat base glide and transitioning to your toe edge. Practice on long mellow runs just picking up speed, almost to the point of uncomfortable, and comitting to laying down some hard turns on your toes then stand up glide for awhile and turn heelside. As with any sport repetition helps so the more often you get on a long run the better. And don't be affraid of messing around with your angles and stances, it's your board you gotta be comforable on it. Even on 50˚ slopes this technique holds true. Good luck!

ThanksBig Ugly.

Funnily enough, i was doing some squat excersises in prep for my boarding holiday in March, and i realised my feet were naturally duck footed. So I think you hit the nail on the head, i'm going to give it a bash.

I'll also try angling the back plate forward a little bit, I understand what you're saying about forcing me to ride with more bent knee's. I had a lesson last year and the instructor also kept telling me to ride as low as possible.

 Bring on Alpe D'huez!!!!!

 Thanks again.
